Parenting is hard, especially in the busy world that we live in. Applying these small and simple skills each week will help you in your journey of parenting and build connection with your children and/or teens!

Practicing mindfulness–being fully present and attentive in the moment–allows parents to truly see, hear, and understand their children and teens. When you slow down and focus on your child or teen without distraction, you create a safe and supportive space where your child or teen feels valued. In a busy life, mindfulness can be woven into small, everyday moments like pausing to make eye contact when a child speaks, putting the phone away during meals, or taking a deep breath before responding to an emotional outburst.
For example, when a teen comes home frustrated after school and slams their backpack against the ground and forcefully opens the fridge, instead of immediately offering solutions, use mindfulness and say something along the lines of, “It sounds like today was really tough. Want to talk about it?” This simple shift–being present rather than reactive–builds trust and deepens the relationship.
Mindfulness strengthens connection by showing children and teens that they matter, not just in big moments, but in the small, everyday interactions that shape their sense of security and belonging.
