Parenting Tip of the Week: Encourage Empathy

Writer: Eddie Shin, LMFTEddie Shin, LMFT

Parenting is hard, especially in the busy world that we live in. Applying these small and simple skills each week will help you in your journey of parenting and build connection with your children and/or teens!

Empathy is one of the most important skills a child or teen can develop, and as parents, we have a powerful role in guiding them to understand and care about the feelings of others. Empathy helps children build deeper relationships, navigate social situations with greater ease, and develop emotional intelligence. It also fosters a home environment filled with understanding, respect, and kindness.

Empathy allows children and teens to recognize emotions in others, understand different perspectives, and respond with kindness and compassion. This skill helps them form meaningful connections, resolve conflicts more effectively, and build strong friendships. Studies have shown that empathetic children and teens tend to have better emotional regulation, stronger communication skills, and even greater academic success due to their ability to collaborate with others.

The great news? Empathy is something that can be taught and practiced!

Children and teens learn best by watching the adults around them. Model empathy in your interactions—whether with your child, your partner, or even strangers.

For example, if you see someone struggling, say something like, “That person looks frustrated. Maybe we can offer to help.”

Or another example is if they’re venting about a frustrating teacher or friend, respond with, “I can see why you’re upset. I wonder what they might be going through right now that made them act that way.”

Empathy is a skill that takes time and practice, but by consistently encouraging reflection, modeling kindness, and creating opportunities for compassion, you are helping your child or teen build a foundation for deeper, more meaningful relationships.
